Simon Cowell is backing Little Mix to win this year’s ‘X Factor’.

The 52-year-old music mogul – who is still at the helm of the ITV1 show, despite quitting his role on the judging panel to concentrate on the US version of the series – is a huge fan of the girl group and thinks they would make worthy winners in next weekend’s final.

Judge Tulisa Contostavlos – who is mentoring the girls – said: “Simon rang me at home one night to chat about the show, telling me things he wanted to work on to keep the programme as fresh as possible and things he liked, which was nice to hear.

“He told me that he really liked the girls. He actually said he’s backing them to win. They’re all really nice girls.”

Little Mix – made up of Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock – are desperate to make the final and would love to perform alongside ‘Price Tag’ hitmaker Jessie J.

Jade recently said: “We’d love to make it to the final. We’ve just got to keep working hard and see how it goes. We want to perform with Jessie J.

“She’s so inspirational. From her songs to the way she performs, she’s just the most amazing performer ever. She really means a lot to us.”

Jesy added: “If not Jessie J, then Tulisa. We love Tulisa, it would be amazing.”

Chart star Ellie Goulding has been chosen to perform in front of Barack Obama at the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony in the US.

The UK singer – who earlier this year performed at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton – will join the Black Eyed Peas and Kermit the Frog at the ceremony in Washington DC tomorrow.

Goulding, 24, performed at the American Music Awards earlier this month.

She rose to prominence after winning the Critics Choice award at the Brits in 2010, shortly after topping the BBC’s Sound of 2010 poll.

She went on to have a number two hit with a cover of Elton John’s ‘Your Song’, after it was featured in a TV ad.

The Christmas tree ceremony takes place near the White House with the president officially lighting the tree.

TV host Carson Daly will host the ceremony and other performers will include Big Time Rush and OneRepublic.
