This article is an attempt I made to describe some of the African standards that are attached to African flagpoles in today’s world. Some African countries fly very similar banners whereas some feature very unique standards. Most flags are not that old and can hardly be named historical.

For each entry, the country or territory’s name is given in its most easily recognized form. This is then followed by a short description of its political status and geographic position. The basic data given for each standard contains the status of the flag.

Western Sahara’s flag was adopted in 1976, in the month February. This country adopted their respective flag the day after the Spanish left. It has been hoisted on Western Saharan flag poles for more than 35 years! The country’s standard resembles the national flag of Palestine. Different elements on this flag are symbolic for Islam.

Algeria is located east of Morocco. Even though neighbors, Algeria flies a very different flag from Algerian flagpoles. Algeria is the largest country in Africa. The country’s standard is a bi-color type standard, meaning that this flag features two vertical bands (green and white).

Tunisia’s flag features similar elements, as does the flag of Algeria and other African countries. The national standard of Tunisia very much looks like Turkey. Even though the current flag features a five pointed star, the star used to have six points.

Many of today’s African countries and nations used to be colonies of other countries for years, if not decades, if not centuries. The very first colony to obtain independence from the French was Guinea. The republic of Guinea adopted its new flag in the fifties. The pattern of this national standard resembles that of France, except that it is used the colors red, yellow and green. The French tricolor flies the colors blue, white and red.

Egypt has been featured in the news for a number of months, if not more than one year, because of the different events that are part of the country’s ongoing revolution. The Egyptian flag has been flying around from African and such flag poles for a few decades. This flag is a tricolor type standard, and it’s design uses the colors black, red and white. The top band is red, and the bottom one is white.

Nations that fly african flags include: Libya and South Africa.
