The second and third week in September bring Expo New Mexico to downtown Albuquerque. All of the state’s best as well as an ample list of national entertainment highlight the festivities of this state’s annual fair.
No two state fairs are the same and New Mexico’s shines with the epitome of southwestern themes. In addition to the arts and the agricultural exhibits of the area this fair also boasts a Native American Village, African American Pavilion, and the Villa Hispana, where each shows off the best and most unique elements of local music and art. Not only are indigenous cultures given the spotlight there are also interesting concessions for visitors’ purchases. Silver and turquoise jewelry are available for purchase. Also for hungry visitors such dietary delights as tacos and buffalo burgers are to be had for a nominal fee.
Expo New Mexico lists among its state’s Natural Resources Building exhibits those dealing with minerals and the mining industry of the region. This would tend to distinguish this fair from others in different parts of the country.
Not that this 236 acre fair lacks any features of other fairs: it does not! All of the carnival atmosphere, 4H judging and rodeo events that are found at the typical state fair are to be found at Expo New Mexico.
Attesting to the artistic culture of New Mexico the state fair has several galleries to showcase some of the state’s most amazing artists. For the younger kids there’s lots of displays of elementary, middle, and high school level artwork the School Arts building.
The timing of this fair after Labor Day is particularly beneficial to the traveler. In general most of the rates associated with traveling are cheaper by that time and the crowds are definitely thinner. The cooler weather of early Autumn make New Mexico a very pleasant place to be and still a nice warm place to visit if you are trying to get away from the downright cold weather of some of the Northern states.

It is not held on the Island of Hawaii, but on the Island of Oahu, so when you are planning on making a trip to the islands for the fair make sure you don’t end up on the wrong one. The fair is put together by E.K. Fernandez Shows, a company that is locally owned and whose founder helped to bring the idea of fairs and carnivals to Hawaii.
Visitors to the fair can usually find it easily because it is held every year at the Aloha Stadium. Normally a place that hosts thousands of fans and football teams during the cooler months; it is still the site of much fun in summer, just in a different form. It’s the only fair in Hawaii where you can the Wild Cat Rollercoaster and Skyliner Rides. Make sure before getting on board that you don’t tend towards motion sickness.
For the kids there’s the Sea Lion Splash Show that operates three times a day. Watch the cute furry creatures perform stunts and drench the front of the crowd in water. You may even get to volunteer to be a part of the show. For the adults there’s the Beer Garden, the only place at the fair where you can buy and enjoy alcoholic drinks. Entertainment is usually available in the form of free musical acts and the always popular Karaoke.
Visitors can get to and from the fair on Oahu’s Public Transportation System accurately called TheBus. Buses go all over the island, including the Aloha Stadium and have many easy to find stops. This makes it easy for visitors to check out some of the islands other wonderful sites. The Honolulu Zoo is all week, or you can see the Bishop Museum considered to be the largest museum in the State of Hawaii.

Every year for eight days in the beginning of October the town of Fryeburg, Maine holds a big fair. Visitors come from all around to watch the championships held on the fairs Woodsmen’s Day. You’ll find that the fair is plumb full of loggers, woodsmen and woodswomen.
Field Events for the Woodsmen’s Day championships come in the forms of Women’s and Men’s Bucksaw, Crosscut, Jack and Jill Crosscut, Underhand Chop, the axe throw, the Springboard Chop, Stock Chainsaw, Open Chainsaw and Tree Felling. Last but not least is the event that’s associated with Lumberjacks everywhere, the Log Roll. Crowds laugh it up watching two people attempting to stay balanced on a rolling tree log floating in the water.
As you can probably tell the logging industry is a big part of Maine’s economy and as such the fair organizers work hard to bring in booths that educate visitors on the many products that can be made with wood and some exhibits even give out treats or occasionally baby trees you can plant.
The oldest and still most popular ride at the Fryeburg Fair is the Pony Rides. Kids just love ponies and better yet the chance to ride on one. You may find your kids begging you to buy a pony after taking a few rides on one. Another great place for the kids at the fair is Hayseed Theater. The theater has places to sit for you to get off your feet and for your kids to wind down and plenty of concessions to grab a bite to eat. Entertainment comes in the form of Puppet Shows, Storytellers, Magicians, and Clowns, all of whom will enrapture your kid with delight.
For a more adult atmosphere and a place to relax you can head over to the Gazebo. There are barbershop quartets, stilt walkers, bluegrass bands and even magic tricks. Sit on the grass or bring a light blanket and plan on buying some concession foods for a nice little picnic.
